I must say: You never saw "glorious" if you never had an undergrad Organic lab in Old Sawtooth. Phew! It's long gone, and that is probably a good thing.

In addition to names and military unit identification, all the gravestones are numbered, starting with 1 and going to over 3,000. An interesting numbering scheme was used on some of the low-numbered graves in the southwest corner: they have half-numbers. That is, there is a marker numbered 10, next to a marker numbered 10-1/2, next to a marker numbered 11. The majority of the soldiers buried here succumbed to diseases contracted in the confines of the Camp Chase military prison camp, to which the cemetery was originally attached.

This time around, the building is owned by the City of Columbus. (It was more of a treat to go to it when it was the F & R Lazarus Co. department store.)

Contains many murals on interior walls. These were painted as W.P.A. projects during the Depression years. They are on a grand scale.

Huh. The annotation at the top of the page says National City Plaza is "3 km from center" of Columbus. _I_ consider the center of Columbus to be Broad & High Streets, which is one block to the west of National City. I cannot imagine where the mappers consider the center of Columbus to be located! /fowlerrw

Other than the fact that the canal lock ruins are not exactly within the rectangle, the text is correct.

Agree on the high quality of Rife's beef cuts. They're also excellent on locally-grown vegetables & fruits in season. I'm not as emphatic as Patarroyo,
but given the choice, I'll patronize them over Giant Eagle or Kroger any time.

Yes. Still cranking out cast steel parts for the railroad industry by the ton.
Also noteworthy as the place to which the Columbus Police Department takes confiscated weapons, melting them down in an electric furnace.

The Old Ohio Penetentiary aka "The Walls",

Well. The idea of keeping the walls was discussed, but suddenly abandoned after
a good, long portion of the east wall collapsed all by itself one fine day, destroying several cars which were parked next to it. A retired guard at the prison stated at the time of the wall collapse that for over a decade back in the 1950s and 60s he had been assigned to one or another of the corner towers. He and his fellow guards stared at each other, from tower to tower, along the top of the wall, day after day. At that time, they believed the wall was in such bad shape that several of them started a betting pool as to the date the wall would collapse. As long as the Pen was operating, no one ever collected.
This retired guard was the last man remaining alive -- but he didn't get the funds from the pool because the guard who had held the funds had long since died.
